LANGHORNE – Sen. Farry (R-6) and Rep. Hogan (R-142) announced today that PennDOT confirmed the existing service roads can be retained as local roads as part of the U.S. 1, Section RC3 transportation improvement project.

In response to concerns raised by some residents, Farry and Hogan sent a letter to PennDOT on May 18 seeking clarification on whether the department’s planned safety improvements along Route 1 could be achieved while preserving the existing local access roads in Langhorne Manor Borough and Middletown Township.

“Some residents have raised questions about how this project could impact their neighborhoods and local access,” said Farry and Hogan. “While PennDOT ultimately makes the decisions regarding the design and scope of this project, we will continue working with the community to ensure they receive accurate information and that their concerns are heard throughout the process.”

PennDOT provided its response on May 29. According to the department, after reviewing public comments submitted during the Environmental Assessment process, additional analysis was completed to evaluate the potential retention of the existing service roads without direct connections to U.S. 1.

PennDOT stated that the analysis found the service roads can generally be retained, while remaining consistent with the overall purpose and need of the project.

PennDOT has also indicated it will meet with Middletown Township and Langhorne Manor Borough officials soon to discuss the retention of the existing service roads within their municipal boundaries. The municipalities currently own and maintain the service roads and retaining them as part of this project will have cost implications for local taxpayers.
