In this Update:
Celebrating 250 Years of American Freedom250 years ago – on July 4, 1776 – our nation’s founders gathered in Philadelphia and signed the Declaration of Independence. President Abraham Lincoln once described the Declaration as “an apple of gold” and said it gave “liberty, not alone to the people of this country, but hope to the world for all future time.” I hope you have a wonderful Fourth of July weekend with friends and family celebrating the birth of this great nation. If you are looking for a way to celebrate, here are the events happening in the 6th Senatorial District, including parades, fireworks, and more. Please check event websites for any weather-related updates. Southampton Days Country Fair and Parade The Southampton Days Fair has been happening all week and will finish with their annual July 4th parade on Saturday. It will begin with the baby parade at 9am, followed by the main parade at 9:30 a.m. The parade forms at Jaymor Rd. and precedes North on Second St. Pike to Klinger Middle School. The fairgrounds will briefly close from noon to 6 p.m., before re-opening and featuring performances, rides, food, and a rendition of the National Anthem and God Bless America before fireworks at 9:35 p.m. Lower Southampton Township Parade Styer Orchard 4th of July Celebration Fireworks at Sesame Place Honoring the Life of Lyle Winters
I was honored to attend the services for Lyle Winters of Parkland Fire Company and present a Senate condolence resolution to his children in recognition of the extraordinary life he lived. Lyle was a true pioneer in the fire service as one of the first members of Parkland Fire Company, the first full-time paid Fire Marshal for Middletown Township, and the first firefighter in the United States to use the Hurst Tool, better known as the “Jaws of Life.” He helped shape the future of emergency response. His leadership, innovation, and unwavering commitment to serving others will leave a lasting impact on Parkland, Middletown Township, and surrounding communities. I had the privilege of knowing Lyle personally, and I know his legacy will continue to inspire generations of firefighters and first responders. My deepest condolences go out to Lyle’s family and friends, and to his brothers and sisters at Parkland Fire Company. May we always remember and honor a life dedicated to serving others. Michael Bean Honored for 28 Years Protecting the CommunityI was proud to recognize Michael Bean on his retirement from Newtown Fire-Rescue and honor his twenty-eight years of dedicated service to our community. Michael has served Newtown Fire-Rescue as a firefighter, Emergency Medical Technician, field officer and Shift Supervisor. His passion for the fire service extends beyond his career, as he also serves as the volunteer Fire Chief of Warrington Fire Company, a role he will continue in retirement. Thank you to Michael for his decades of dedication, sacrifice, and leadership. Congratulations on an outstanding career and continued service to the community. Senate Votes to Improve PA Amber Alert Response
The Senate passed legislation to help law enforcement respond more effectively during Amber Alerts and missing person investigations. Senate Bill 1273 clarifies that the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission may share time-sensitive information collected through its automated tolling system with law enforcement in specific situations. This includes cases involving Amber Alerts and Missing Endangered Person Advisory System alerts, where rapid access to vehicle data can be critical. This commonsense measure improves coordination between agencies to help a citizen in danger when every minute counts. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration. Legislation to ensure older Pennsylvanians receive complete information about long-term care options was approved by the Senate. The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration. Senate Bill 482, which I am a co-sponsor, strengthens outreach and accountability surrounding Pennsylvania’s Living Independence for the Elderly (LIFE) Program, which helps eligible seniors remain in their homes and communities while receiving comprehensive healthcare and support services. Currently, individuals enrolling in Medicaid managed care may not receive information about the LIFE Program during the enrollment process. Senate Bill 482 requires the state’s Independent Enrollment Broker to include information about the LIFE Program with enrollment materials provided to eligible individuals. Summer heat waves can be merely uncomfortable or worse depending on how we react. Drink plenty of water, limit time outside and cool off with AC. Call 211 or visit here for a list of cooling centers by county. And check on older family and neighbors. Never leave kids or pets in a vehicle. Most vehicle heatstroke deaths involving children are a result of a parent or caregiver forgetting a child in a car. Check the back seat before walking away from your car. I hope you stay safe and cool and have a fantastic summer. |
