Happy Thanksgiving!

Nearly 250 years ago, the Second Continental Congress proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving in honor of the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga. The battle was an important one for our new country. After the Continental Army had been in retreat, the British discovered that despite what they originally thought, the American army would not be easily defeated.

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday on the last Thursday in November.

Gathering with loved ones gives us the opportunity to celebrate our own perseverance and successes. This Thanksgiving, may you be blessed with full tables and full hearts. Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, my office will be closing on Wednesday Nov. 27 at noon and will reopen Monday Dec. 2 at 9am.

Shopping Small Boosts Our Local Economy

To spotlight the role that small businesses play, Small Business Saturday will be held Saturday, Nov. 30. The holiday season is a wonderful time to shop small.

More than 1.1 million small businesses in Pennsylvania benefit their local economies and employ 2.5 million people.

Large Animal Rescue Training

I had the exciting opportunity to stop by a large animal rescue training at PARX casino last week, where the local county animal response teams, Philadelphia Police Department, the office of emergency management, and local fire companies and PARX employees spent a day training to prepare in the event of an emergency at the racetrack.

Scholarship Funds to Families in Bucks County

I recently had the honor to join some of my colleagues at a scholarship presentation ceremony at Holy Family Regional School in Levittown.

I’m excited to share that the Bridge Educational Foundation, with support from Waste Management and Verizon, is donating $238,500 of scholarship money to families in Bucks County. Scholarship funds are made possible through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program.

The presentation was held at Holy Family Regional School and representatives from Comprehensive Learning Center, Conwell-Egan Catholic HS, Holy Trinity School, Our Lady of Good Counsel School, Our Lady of Grace School, St. Charles of Borromeo School, St. Joseph/St. Robert School, St. Katharine Drexel Regional Catholic School and St. Michael the Archangel were in attendance to accept the check.

Congratulations to Local Poet Laureates

Congratulations to Lake Angela (right) of Warrington, who was named the 48th annual Bucks County Poet Laureate by Bucks County Community College.  Kudos also go out to Madeline Marriott (second from right) of Northampton, who was named a runner-up in the longest-running poet laureate contest in the commonwealth, while 2023 laureate Tara Tamburello (second from left) of Langhorne Manor was also celebrated.

Read more about the honor here.

Lake, Madeline, Tara, and other poets were celebrated a Nov. 16 reception at the college.
