Civic Engagement in Action: 75 Students Joined My “Senator for a Day”

Last week, I welcomed 75 students from eight different high schools to Neshaminy High School for our third annual ‘Senator for a Day’ program. The students had the opportunity to step into the roles of state senators and experience state government and the legislative process firsthand.

Students engaged in structured committees to debate legislation modeled after real bills that have been introduced in the Senate of Pennsylvania. The students then gathered for a mock general session of the Senate where twelve pieces of legislation moved out of committee and were considered by the full group of senators.

This program gives students a hands-on look at lawmaking, encouraging real debate, collaboration, and respect for differing opinions.

Participating schools included Neshaminy High School, Bensalem High School, William Tennent High School, Council Rock South High School, Council Rock North High School, Conwell-Egan Catholic High School, Holy Ghost Prepatory High School, and Bucks County Technical High School.

State Funding for Tactical Equipment and Training for Northampton Fire Department

State Representatives Kristin Marcell, Joe Hogan and I are proud to have secured over $26,000 in state funding for Northampton Township Fire Department. The Fire Department has used the funds for tactical equipment; ballistic vests, helmets and medical bags for their firefighters and EMT’s. They also used the funding for tactical training for their fireighters, EMT’s and police officers to ensure the safety of Northampton Township residents, especially our schools, workplaces, and places of worship. Committee Advances Bill to Strengthen Pennsylvania’s Nursing Workforce

As chairman of The Senate Institutional and Sustainability Committee, I am proud to announce we unanimously passed important legislation aimed at addressing nursing workforce challenges in Pennsylvania out of our committee on Tuesday.

Senate Bill 998, sponsored by Sen. Rosemary Brown, would establish a targeted grant program for accredited nursing programs to help them recruit and retain faculty, develop nurse preceptors, and expand student programming and enrollment. Funding could also support faculty development and enhance clinical training opportunities through strategic partnerships.

Dr. Jones, President & CEO of Bucks County Community College said “The biggest challenge to increasing the number of nurses is clinical placements. This grant could provide funding for us to increase the capacity of our simulation lab and, thus, free up more clinical spaces. That would allow us to increase the number of nursing students we could accept and graduate into the profession.”

This bill now heads to the full Senate for a vote.

Bill Requiring Parental Notification of School Weapons Incidents Set to Become Law

Legislation requiring school districts to notify parents and school employees of any incidents involving possession of  weapons on school property is set to become law.

Under current law, school districts are not required to inform parents or guardians about incidents when a weapon is brought onto school grounds or to related activities. The changes in Senate Bill 246 apply to public, nonpublic and private schools.

The bill, which first passed the Senate in May, received strong bipartisan support from the General Assembly and now awaits the governor’s signature.

New Protections Against Telemarketers Approved by Senate

The Senate approved legislation to better protect Pennsylvanians from scammers and other deceitful telemarketers.

Senate Bill 992 prohibits telemarketing calls being made on Sundays and either before 9 a.m. or after 7 p.m. on every other day of the week. It also expands the law to cover text messages, voicemails and “ringless” voicemails – tools often used by telemarketers to evade existing restrictions. In addition, it establishes penalties for both telemarketers and the companies that hire them for illegal activity.

The bill would also prohibit the use of artificial intelligence or fake caller IDs to deceive or defraud consumers. A violation of the law carries a civil penalty of up to $1,000 or $3,000 if the person contacted is age 60 or older. The bill was sent to the House of Representatives for consideration
