In this Update:
Join Us Next Week for State Services DayState representatives K.C. Tomlinson, Kristin Marcell, Joe Hogan, and I are hosting a State Services Day with State Treasurer Stacy Garrity on August 9 from 1:30 to 3pm at the Neshaminy Activity Center, located at 1842 Brownsville Rd. in Feasterville. Residents of the 6th Senatorial district are invited to this free event to meet with a PA Treasury staff member who can conduct comprehensive searches and submit claims for unclaimed property for them, their family, or their business. PA Treasury staff will also provide information on the PA 529 College and Career Savings Plan programs. Unclaimed property can include dormant bank accounts, abandoned stocks, uncashed checks, saving bonds and other tangible assets such as collectible coins, sports cards, jewelry, military medals and antiques. Our staff will also be able to assist with senior SEPTA passes, PennDOT forms, birth and death certificate applications, property tax/rent rebate applications, and other state services. Please call our office at 215-638-1784 with any questions. Congratulations to Herb Schoell on his RetirementI was honored to present a citation from the Senate of Pennsylvania to Herb Schoell for his retirement from the Upper Southampton Municipal Authority. Herb has dedicated thirty-one years of service to the Authority, twenty of those years as Manager. In his retirement, Herb plans to travel with his wife Nancy and spend time with his family. He will continue serving his community as President of the 3rd District Volunteer Fire Company in Bristol where he has been a member for more than four decades. He will also continue to serve the people of Upper Southampton Township as a consultant for both the authority and the township. I want to thank Herb for his extraordinary commitment to our community and congratulate him on his well-deserved retirement. YMCA Let Your Colors Shine EventI was happy to attend YMCA’s Let Your Colors Shine event last week. The event brought together hundreds of campers from across the service area to celebrate youth empowerment and forge new friendships. I am pictured here with my children, Jacob and Charlotte and from left to right, Ryan Hazelett, Vice President of Childcare, Zane Moore, President & CEO and Debbie Sontupe, Chief Development Officer. Lower Bucks Chamber of Commerce State of the StateThank you to Lower Bucks Chamber of Commerce for hosting their State of the State yesterday. It was a great opportunity for my colleagues and I to provide a legislative update and answer questions on important issues to the business community. Topics I spoke about included the state budget, transportation funding, safe communities, and protecting seniors from fraud. I am pictured here with Representatives Tomlinson and Hogan and representatives from AARP. New Car Insurance After a Lapse? Remember to Notify PennDOTEvery month, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) suspends more than 15,000 vehicle registrations due to drivers cancelling or switching car insurance and forgetting to provide proof of new car insurance to PennDOT. Pennsylvania law requires all motor vehicle owners to maintain car insurance. A lapse in insurance coverage triggers a potential vehicle suspension for three months or a civil penalty of $500 in lieu of the registration suspension. An insurance provider is only required to notify PennDOT when car insurance is cancelled, not when it is initiated. The vehicle owner is responsible to update PennDOT to avoid a registration suspension and other penalties. PennDOT mails a letter to the registered vehicle owner explaining the lapse in insurance coverage, as well as the consequences for failing to provide new car insurance. To avoid being pulled over for not having car insurance even though your car is insured, remember to share your new car insurance information with PennDOT. Provide proof of insurance on PennDOT’s website, email your new insurance card to PennDOT at frinsurance@pa.gov or call PennDOT’s Financial Responsibility Unit at 717-412-5300.
