Governor Shapiro Visits Langhorne to Discuss Transit Funding

I joined Governor Shapiro, PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll, SEPTA General Manager and CEO Leslie Richards and Transit Police Chief Charles Lawson, as well as Sen. Haywood and Rep. Hogan at the Langhorne Train Station to highlight the important issue of transit funding.

Transit plays a vital role in the 6th Senatorial District for our citizens, students, and workforce and I appreciate the Governor coming to our district to champion for investments in clean, safe, and on-time public transit across the Commonwealth.

The safety of our transit operators and passengers is an important initiative I have been working on in Harrisburg. Over the past year, there has been a significant increase of threats and assaults on transit operators in Pennsylvania – including gun violence, physical assaults and other disruptions.

My legislation, Senate Bill 977, which passed Senate with bipartisan support would make it a serious crime to interfere with an operator of any public transit vehicle. The offense would be classified as a felony of the third degree if the interference causes bodily injury. The offense would be steepened to a felony of the first degree if the intrusion causes serious bodily injury or death.

The bill is named after U.S. Army veteran Bernard Gribbin – a SEPTA bus operator who was tragically murdered while working on Oct. 26. It is in the House of Representatives for consideration.

Guest Chaplain at the Capitol

On May 6th we recognized Police Memorial Day at the Capitol to honor all our law enforcement officers that made the ultimate sacrifice.  Chief William Wiegman Jr., was our guest chaplain in the Senate that day and was joined by his family.

Chief Weigman currently serves as the chaplain for the Pennsylvania Fraternal Order of Police and served the community of Lower Southampton as a police officer for many years before he retired as Chief.

I want to thank Chief Wiegman and all our law enforcement officers and families for all the sacrifices they make daily keeping our families and communities safe.
