Coaches Vs. Cancer Event at Maple Point Middle School

Last week, I attended the annual Coaches vs. Cancer night at Maple Point Middle School in Langhorne where the Neshaminy School District community came together to raise money and awareness for cancer research. The event featured a friendly competition with the boys’ basketball teams from Maple Point Middle School and Carl Sandburg Middle School.

This is the premier CvC event in Bucks County as the $42,203.93 raised for the American Cancer Society at their 2024 event was the most raised by any single school in Southeastern PA. They have already raised over $40,000 this year with fundraising continuing through June.

Prior to the game, three cancer patients in the district were honored for their fight and their bravery.

VIENNA WALTERS – MOTHER HEATHER IS A FORMER MAPLE POINT STAFF MEMBER

In April of 2023 at age 4, Vienna was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a brain cancer. As a side effect of her surgery, Vienna had to re-learn how to talk, walk, eat and drink with therapy and determination. Vienna underwent high intensity chemotherapy and stem cell transplants as part of her treatment at CHOP.

Although Vienna had a local tumor re-occurrence this past fall and is currently undergoing chemotherapy, she is thriving in Kindergarten, gymnastics, Girl Scouts, and being the best big sister. She faces everything with her strong spirit, a smile on her face, and her proud little sister by her side cheering her on.

Vienna was joined by her mother Heather and father Corey.

MRS. CAROL BURCZ – 16 YEAR EMPLOYEE OF THE NESHAMINY SCHOOL DISTRICT

Mrs. Burcz was a dedicated employee of the Neshaminy School District for 16 years as a computer aide at Neshaminy Middle School, and later a secretary for Pupil Services. While Carol has had a tough battle with cancer, she has always maintained a positive attitude and is an inspiration to all who know and love her.

Carol is currently battling lung cancer and was unable to attend. Her husband, Len, who retired from Neshaminy’s Transportation department, and son Kevin, who works in the Facilities and Engineering department unfortunately were also unable to attend.

However, Carol’s sister-in-law, Carolyn Booz and niece, Dawn Toth, who both work/worked at Sandburg, Dawn’s husband Mike, Carol’s great-niece Sophie and Carol’s great- nephew Jaxson who attends Maple Point attended in her honor.

DONNA JACKSON – 25 YEAR EMPLOYEE OF THE NESHAMINY SCHOOL DISTRICT

Mrs. Jackson is the heart of Carl Sandburg. On a daily basis, she builds positive relationships with students and staff and is always happy to lend a helping hand.

Mrs. Jackson is involved in Sandburg’s school wide positive behavior program, spearheads the SPIRIT service club, runs the school store and is the PTO liaison.

Mrs. Jackson was unable to attend because of her battle, so her daughter, Kate Lawrence, a teacher at Carl Sandburg, son in law Ross Lawrence and granddaughters Julianna and Aubriella were there in her honor.

My family and I are extremely proud and thankful for the support from the community as my wife continues on her journey to crush cancer. Events like these bring awareness and hope to all those battling cancer and I would like to wish the Walters, Burcz, and Jackson families well and I will continue to keep them in my thoughts.

Local Robotics Competition at Bensalem High School

This past weekend, my son and I had a great time attending the FIRST Robotics Competition at Bensalem High School. Throughout the weekend, teams from Palisades to Bensalem and across our region competed for top prize and a spot at the championship.

Bensalem’s Team, The Fightin’ Robotic Owls won the FIRST Impact Award. This is the most prestigious award in FIRST Robotics and it recognizes teams that go beyond the competition to make a real difference in their communities.

The Fightin’ Robotic Owls will compete in the FMA District Championship at Stabler Arena in Lehigh University next week. Congratulations and best of luck!

State Government Discussion at William Tennent High School

I was pleased to speak with a government class at William Tennent High School last week. I spoke about the role of state government and shared my story of how I chose a life of public service. We had an engaging conversation about the importance of compromise in state government, using examples of legislation I worked on and am currently working on.

Conwell Egan Catholic High School Sports Hall of Fame

I was honored to attend the Conwell Egan Catholic High School Sports Hall of Fame Ceremony last week at the Northampton Country Club. Congratulations to all inductees.

Warrington Vietnam Veterans Ceremony

Today, I was honored to attend and speak at the Warrington Township Annual Vietnam Veterans Day event hosted by Warrington’s Veterans Affair Committee.  We recognized and honored those who fought valiantly for our freedoms. We are grateful for their courage and sacrifices.

Nine million Americans served during the Vietnam War era and 58,000 gave their lives. Sadly, because many people didn’t view the war favorably, Vietnam War veterans received a cold reception when they returned to American soil. Some were even deeply mistreated.

March 29 marks the day in 1973 when the last United States troops left Vietnam. That same day, 591 American prisoners were released and returned to the United States.
