I was proud to help secure $181,697 in state funding for Nova Bucks County. This investment will allow them to complete critical building upgrades and security system improvements across their facilities in Bucks County. I joined Sen. Santarsiero, staff members of Sen. Coleman and Rep. Marcell, and members of the Bucks County Redevelopment Authority earlier this month to present the check to NOVA. We also received a tour of their Bucks County Children’s Advocacy Center, a child-friendly center, protecting the interests of children by facilitating a coordinated, child-centered response to child abuse reports and by promoting the rights and needs of at-risk and abused children. I am proud to support NOVA Bucks and the work they do every day protecting and supporting individuals and families impacted by crime. Find out more about what they do: Network of Victim Assistance – Bucks County, PA – NOVA Community Health and Safety EventsI am grateful to have attended two impactful community events last week— a community health fair hosted by Middletown Township and Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad and a child safety symposium hosted by Tri-Hampton Rescue Squad. Both events brought together healthcare providers, first responders, and families to share important resources, from health screenings to child safety education. I am pictured here with my son Jacob at the symposium where I was especially proud to see Lenape Valley Foundation highlighting the FiRST Program—a peer support line for first responders and their loved ones in Bucks County. This program was the basis for legislation I authored, Act 69 of 2020. Rep. Schlossberg and I worked in a bipartisan effort on this bill that established a mental wellness and stress management protocol within the PA Department of Health. This law helps ensure that emergency responders have access to the support they need when facing post-traumatic stress and brain injuries. Honoring Retiring LieutenantCongratulations to Lieutenant Matthew J. Bowman on his retirement from the Lower Southampton Police Department after a thirty-nine-year career. While I was in Harrisburg, our staff presented Lt. with a citation from the Senate of Pennsylvania earlier this week for his many years of dedicated service protecting our community. Since beginning his career in 1991, Lt. Bowman has served with professionalism, leadership, and a strong commitment to the community. Over the years, he had a variety of roles, including patrol, community policing, and Accreditation Manager, helping uphold the department’s high standards. He rose through the ranks to Corporal, Sergeant, and most recently Lieutenant. A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, Lt. Bowman was also a founding member of the department’s Police Honor Guard and its first bicycle patrol officer. Bowman is pictured here with his wife, Siri, and his son Jarrett, a Pennsylvania State Trooper. I want to thank Lieutenant Bowman for his outstanding service and wish him all the best in a well-earned retirement with his family. Interested in Law Enforcement? Check Out This State Police Program
If you are thinking about a future in law enforcement, consider participating in the Pennsylvania State Police Law and Leadership Academy, which offers a 15-week program to experience the process of becoming a cadet. Applicants aged 18 and over with a high school diploma or GED can apply. The program covers:
The program runs from early May to early August at six locations statewide. Cadets meet twice a week, with occasional Saturday sessions. You can learn more here. Promoting Reading for Lifelong Success
March is National Reading Month – a time to encourage children, families and communities to make reading a daily habit. Studies show childhood reading difficulties often lead to long-term, negative effects throughout life. Working with our schools to help improve literacy is vital as we help the next generation build a strong educational foundation. As part of the current state budget, we established important evidence-based reading instruction requirements. With a concerted effort, we can dramatically improve students’ chances of success and instill the excitement that comes with fostering a love of reading from a young age.
