Major Investment for Pennsylvania’s Future

As chair of the Senate Institutional and Sustainability Committee, I was invited to attend a press conference on Friday, hosted by Eli Lilly Company and Governor Shapiro, announcing a major investment in Pennsylvania’s future. Eli Lilly and Company plans to invest $3.5 billion to build a new state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Lehigh County. This project is expected to create 850 permanent Lilly jobs and 2,000 construction jobs.

While this investment is not located in Bucks County, it will benefit Eastern Pennsylvania and the Commonwealth as a whole, by strengthening our life sciences sector and supporting good-paying jobs for Pennsylvanians. It is always encouraging to see a major employer choose to invest here, creating opportunity and economic growth for communities across our state.

Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce State of the State

Last month, I joined my colleagues at Delaware Valley University for Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce’s State of the State event. The address was moderated by the PA Chamber and covered important topics affecting many people in Bucks County and across the state, including energy costs, housing, affordability, and workforce and economic development.

I participated as a panelist alongside fellow elected officials, addressed audience questions, and I remained after the event to engage in one-on-one conversations with members and answer any remaining questions.

Celebrating Centenarian Birthdays in the District

Last week we had the pleasure of celebrating two centenarian birthdays in the district. Our staff joined Elizabeth Schanne at Holland Village, where she resides, to celebrate her 100th birthday and present a citation from the Senate of PA. Elizabeth Schanne, born January 13, 1926 in Philadelphia, has spent most of her life serving her family and community as a Navy wife during WWII, ballroom dance instructor, artist, faith-filled volunteer, and a trailblazing Bucks County realtor for more than five decades while raising five children. She continues to be a strength to her family, now spanning five generations — and to everyone blessed to know her.

I joined Congressman Fitzpatrick, Rep. Tomlinson and Mayor DiGirolamo at Bensalem Senior Center to celebrate Sally Walter’s 100th birthday. and present her with citations to celebrate the occasion. Sally was born on January 30, 1926, raised her family in Bensalem and worked as a secretary at Bensalem Township School District. When not playing games, she enjoys her 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, and maintains a strict schedule of daily exercises, prayers and chores!

Wishing many more years of health and happiness for Elizabeth and Sally.

Keeping Construction Jobs Local

Legislation to boost the hiring of local workers for public works projects was the topic of a hearing held by the Senate Labor and Industry Committee.

Senate Bill 1076 is modeled after existing local hire programs in West Virginia, Montana and Illinois, and specifies at least half of workers on state and local projects exceeding $500,000 must be residents of Pennsylvania or a neighboring county. Contractors can seek a waiver if they’re unable to secure local workers even after utilizing a local PA CareerLink® office for recruitment.

Testifiers included representatives of local building trades, contractor associations and others. They discussed how a local hire requirement could help address the skilled trade shortage, save taxpayer dollars, promote accountability within the construction industry and more. You can find video of the hearing here.

DEP Recommends Testing Your Home for Radon

Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer after smoking in the U.S. To help mark Radon Action Month, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is encouraging Pennsylvanians to test their homes for radon.

DEP recommends all homes, schools, public and private buildings get tested. Radon test kits are also available at many home improvement and hardware stores, as well as from state-certified radon laboratories. Call DEP’s Radon Division at 717-783-3594, or the Radon Hotline at 800-237-2366, for help with interpreting their test results and what follow-up action may be necessary.
